A proud Woods Cree Nation that values transparency and fairness, supporting members to assert our Treaty rights and sustain our distinct culture
Our Name and Treaty: Duncan's First Nation (Band Number 451) is named after our headman, Duncan Tustaoosts (Tustawits [Testawich]), who signed Treaty 8 on July 1, 1899, on behalf of the Cree population of the Peace River Crossing district. In earlier times we were also known as the Peace River Landing Band.
Population: Our community has approximately 328 registered members, with 144 living on reserve, 2 on other land and 182 living off reserve. Our two reserves, 151A and 151K, total 2,426.1 hectares.
Location: Our band office is in Brownvale, Alberta, about a half-hour drive from the town of Peace River. Our traditional territory includes a large portion of the Peace River Oil Sands.
Culture: Hunting is a long-held tradition. Our members are Woods Cree and also descend from Iroquois and Métis ancestors. Today we partner with industry on economic development and offer community health programs.
